ABOUT THE NAME

Why the name, Spirit Stone Wellness? For starters, there’s a personal connection for me that’s based on a spiritually transformative experience that I had in 2024. I’m not going to get into that here, but if we’re ever in person together, wow… I’ve got an amazing story that I’m happy to share with you!

That said, for a business that focuses on holistic well-being, the Spirit part is easy to explain even without that context. I believe wellness requires loving care for all aspects of ourselves – mind, body, and spirit. All three are essential to our human experience, but Spirit is the only part that sticks with us when we’re done here (IMO). I lost touch with this part of myself for a while, and let's just say there were consequences. I would encourage everyone reading to cultivate a meaningful connection with the part of yourself that defies logical explanation and is nonetheless real, miraculous, and connected to something infinitely greater – however you define that.

As with most things, there’s a valid counter-perspective to consider, so I’m not encouraging folks to make cairns everywhere, especially if it's illegal, interferes with the environment, disrupts natural beauty, or could mislead hikers. Let's all be conscientious, kind, and respectful.

So, what’s with the stones? Growing up as a hippie kid, I spent a lot of time in nature and I became fascinated by the stacks of stones on hiking trails. The way it was explained to me, the stones marked the path for others to help them on their journey – providing insight, but not necessarily explicit direction. It was an act of kindness shared with strangers, a way of providing guidance and offering collective wisdom as an invitation that others traveling the path could follow (or not). It was a form of camaraderie and bonding too, letting others know they’re not alone – someone has been here before, and the stones represent their care and good intentions for those who come after. When it comes to being in nature, I'm in the "leave no trace" camp now (see photo caption), but I still love the original intention: to share wisdom and connection to help others on their path.

Whether it's a trail marker, or a cairn marking a sacred place, stacks of stones remind me that we're all walking this human path together and that Spirit is everywhere, in everything and everyone. As I studied with teachers, healers, monks, and shamans representing a variety of wisdom traditions, I kept coming back to incorporating stones in my personal devotional practice, as well as the group ceremonies and rituals I've been fortunate to experience. From labyrinths and sweat lodges to meditation and energy clearing, the practice of working with stones is a way for me to connect with Earth and Spirit, to quiet my mind through focus and contemplation, to get grounded and centered, and to go deeper inward to find stillness, peace, and balance.

I don’t expect others to have the same connection to spirit stones as I do, or for anyone to work with stones in wellness practice at all, if that’s not your thing. But, words are powerful, they have energy, and they communicate intention. If we’re working together, or will be soon, it’s important to me to share the meaning, the energy, behind Spirit Stone Wellness and why it resonates with me. Thanks for taking the time to get to know the backstory!
